How it is done

The key to the project was the requirement that each paper accepted for conferences be submitted electronically. A server at the University of Pittsburgh was set up where papers could be submitted via ftp or email. Floppy disks could also be mailed in. Authors were requested to submit their files in PostScript. Once the papers were gathered, they were "distilled" into Portable Document Format (PDF) files using Adobe Acrobat Distiller. Not all of the files could be distilled; there were particular problems with PostScript files generated from Macintosh computers. Files which could not be "fixed" were scanned. PDF files were combined and hyperlinks were inserted. Indexes were prepared and hyperlinks inserted for HTML files, too.
